Let's go tramping

If you are new to our tramps, you are welcome.

If you are not Club member, it is a requirement that you contact the trip leader beforehand. Don’t be offended if they ask some simple questions about your physical fitness and experience.  People new to the club and tramping are usually asked to do several easier tramps of shorter duration before becoming members.

Where to meet up

Unless stated otherwise, meet at Ray Small carpark (next to the Papakura Skatepark), Elliot Street, Papakura.

For northbound trips, often we have a meeting point at the Recreation Ground carpark, Great South Road, (near 295 Great South Road), Papatoetoe.  The meeting time at Papatoetoe will be 20 minutes later than the Papakura meet-up time.

What will it cost?

Trip transport is mainly by carpooling, with car fares currently set at 15 cents/km per person. The cost will be in the trip plan below.

Sometimes we hire a rental van. Per person costs for that will be communicated to participants.

How are trips graded?

For guidelines on this, go to our Information for day trips page.

Leader(s)

Mary Crawford - Phone: 021 054 8324

Departs8am at Ray Small carpark, Elliot Street, Papakura.
Fare$8 – $10 (based on car shuffle with key swap)
Description

Starting on the well paved and maintained Wairoa Suspension Bridge, or the Hunua Falls taking the Wairoa Loop track, the group will walk to the Wairoa Cossey. Whatever end you commence there will be an ascent to join the Wairoa Cossey. At this point whatever direction you start from the track conditions will change. The path will be less well maintained, have lots of tree roots to deal with, ups and downs and many steps. Unlike the track at both ends, these are often uneven and narrow requiring focus and care. Generally the surface is uneven and if wet, care is needed and progress will be much slower than on the other 2 well maintained tracks. There will be reservoirs, waterfalls and bush to enjoy during the tramp. Boots and poles recommended. Approximately 11 kms. NB: Trampers must advise the leader of their intention to join the walk by the evening of Friday June 26th. This is to enable arrangements for a car shuffle to be made.
