Reports......Mt
Pirongia - Nikau & Bell Tracks
7 March 2010
Leader:
Marlene Lynam
Today's tramp on the Nikau track near
Mt Pirongia was really beautiful. Most of the time
was spent following the Blue Bull stream up through the
bush, until we came to N.Z's tallest Kahikatea tree.
During the gentle climb the stream made soothing noises
near us. Most of the path was smooth but
occassionally roots like large brown intestines had to
be stepped over. Newly built wooden bridges meant
there were no wet boots stream crossings.
Those who remembered torches and could
handle tight, dark spaces went through the short
limestone cave but, on emerging, said they would not be
in a hurry to do it again.
A bees' nest was in a ponga stump
beside the track and unfortunately some trampers who
wore shorts got stings in painful places.
Our group of eighteen, including new
trampers, were glad to be in the shade or dappled
sunlight of the cool bush on such a hot day.
Led by Marlene, it was an excellent
five hours.
