RIDGE LOOP TRACK
Sunday 7TH February 2010
Leaders: Di & Russ
A small group of six met at Roselands and set off
in two cars onto State highway 1
branching off onto State Highway 2 heading
towards Kaiaua on the Thames coastal road.
On arriving at the
Regional
Park the weather was overcast,
making it quite pleasant for tramping. The
Waharau
Regional Park
extends the gravelly shore of the Firth of Thames
into the eastern foothills of the
Hunua
Ranges.
The Ridge Loop Track walk starts with a slow and
steady climb as it loops through both regenerating and mature forest
for a good part of the walk until reaching the top
( Waharau Ridge Track.) About three hundred
metres before reaching the top is a viewing platform from where a
good view of the Firth of Thames with the
Coromandel Peninsula
beyond can be observed. Here we stopped for a short break and drink
before the last stretch to the top. Luckily we were able to spot
three mountain bikers descending and gave way just in time for them
to continue on their downward journey.
From the top is a slow and pleasant descent along
a wider track which crosses a small river where we stopped for a
lunch and a break along the banks of the river in the shade.
One of the trampers choose to submerge themselves
in the river within the pleasant surroundings.
After a well earned break we continued along the
track for about forty five minutes to the end of tramp to find our
cars all safe and sound.
My wife and I both enjoyed leading the tramp and
hope the rest of the group likewise.
We hope to lead a larger group this time next
year. Come and join us, it’s great fun and excercise. Thanks to
those who joined us.
