Eight keen members headed for Mataitai on a
gloomy, drizzly Sunday morning to learn some new skills using map
and compass. We turned
left on the MTC Loop Track (orange) and followed the stream,
stopping regularly for a map interpretation and orientation exercise
where we noted the steepness of the terrain, streams and surrounding
ridges, and our position.
Morning tea at the junction of the Stream Track (white).
We continued to follow the Stream Track until we
came to a side stream coming in on our right.
Here an old logging track heads up and along a ridge and
intersects another old track which exits back on to the MTC Loop
Track. Using navigation
techniques with map and compass, we were able to bushcrash our way
through on a grid (map) bearing on our compass to follow an
overgrown track.
Interestingly, we exited onto the MTC Loop Track right on target.
After a lunch break, we again headed cross
country following another ridge to intersect the Puriri Track
(pink). This old
logging track was a lot clearer but the exercise using a compass
bearing was still helpful to know that we were heading in the right
direction. Once on the
Puriri Track, we headed for the carpark, feeling very pleased with
ourselves that we had completed the exercise which made it such an
interesting day.
Thanks Dave for teaching us some new skills for
the outdoors. We
realised that a compass is useful only if you know how to use it and
that regular practice is the best way to increase your ability and
confidence. I look
forward to going back into the bush and trying out my new skills.
